Ice Spikes

ice spike in an ice cube tray

Have you ever seen these spikes in your ice cube tray in the freezer?

We had these spies forming last summer.

Never had them before or since.

They went on for about a month – each time we made them, there they were.

We figured it must have been the temperature or perhaps the pressure in the air that was causing them.

Well, while checking out a site last week, I came across an article about ice spikes.

After reading about the distilled water being the culprit, I had to laugh.

We buy our drinking water as our tap water comes from a dug well that has very hard, mineral water that doesn’t taste very good.

We had been buying a few jugs of distilled water as that was all that was available at the market.

From what I read, it seems to be free of the minerals that are in tap water, and this “purer” form of water allows these spikes to form.

I will have to get another jug of that distilled water – I am anxious to see if they do it again.
